CENTRAL AMERICA: Guatemala
The Government of Guatemala declared the country in a state of emergency as the drought continues. Christian Aid partner Bethania continues to provide technical support to 143 families, with 100 kitchen gardens and grain reserves. They say that according to the results of the latest harvest of basic grain 47 per cent of the beneficiary families harvested between 1 and 8 quintales (1 quintal = 100 pounds) of beans and 26 per cent harvested 2-3 quintales of maize. As these will be insufficient to meet their needs, the communities will need to buy grain from October to December 2015. Bethania, which also runs a malnutrition clinic, has not registered any cases of chronic malnutrition amongst the families taking part in the kitchen gardens project.
