Elders Retreat – 19-21 April 2013
A group of Elders went on retreat (a time away together to contemplate,
discuss and enjoy space) with a weekend title “Caring for God’s people”
and a plan to look at Pastoral Care. We stayed at the Emmaus Centre in
West Wickham and, despite major building (demolition)
works taking place, we were looked after very well.
On Friday evening, with the help of excerpts from “Jam & Jerusalem”,
we looked at how Pastoral Care should not be approached although
occasionally there was a little gem of caring, a well-timed gift or word
of practical advice, in the midst of all the chaos.
On Saturday, we were led by Richard Goldring, a summary of his title is
Training Officer for the Southern Synod. A time of prayer was followed
by sessions looking at the theory of Pastoral Oversight and Care along
with study of the Bible. In the evening, during a period of free time, board
games were played and a jigsaw puzzled over.
On Sunday morning, Russell led discussions on how we could apply the
fruits of our discussions to caring for the people of Purley United
Reformed Church. This was followed by our closing service of Communion
in the Chapel.
