Worship Calendar 2026

Worship at Purley United Reformed Church – Month by Month 

Worship is a key part of the life of the church and reflects what is important in all that we do as a community within Purley and further afield. All are welcome and everyone can take an active role within the church.

Holy Communion takes place on the first Sunday of each month and at other key points throughout the year. Everyone is welcome to take communion.

Our Sunday morning services start at 10.30 am and there are light refreshments and an opportunity to meet others afterwards in our church hall

JANUARY 2026 – highlights – Epiphany, Prayer for Christian Unity and Partnership Sunday

  • 6 Jan (Tue) – Epiphany – the coming of the Magi with gifts of Myrrh, Frankincense and Gold
  • 8 Jan – ‘Open to Discussion’ – 10.30 am – Informal Discussion Group – ‘Is Theology Worth Doing?
  • 11 Jan – Sunday Morning Worship – 10.30am – 1st Reading – Isaiah 42 vv.1-9 (OT p.603); 2nd Reading – Matthew 3 vv.13-17 (NT p.2).
  • 18 Jan – Sunday Morning Worship – 10.30 am – Start of Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (18–25 Jan)
  • 25 Jan – Sunday Morning Worship – Partnership Sunday – material provided by our Partnership Church in Hartford, USA for all our Partnership Churches in Ostrava (Czech Republic); Dessau (Germany); Speyer (Germany); Purley (United Kingdom); Hartford (United States of America).
  • 29 Jan – Contemplative Prayer and Bible Study – 10.30 am – this contemplative time is a space for an in-depth contextual study of the bible by making connections with life experiences – past and present and devoting a short quiet time for guided reflective prayer.

FEBRUARY 2026 – highlights – Candlemas, Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day), Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent and our 5-week Lent Course based on the film ‘The Kings Speech’

  • 2 Feb – Candlemas – marking the presentation of Jesus to the Temple (candles are lit on this day)

  • 18 Feb (Wed) – Ash Wednesday – the first day of the 40-day period that Jesus spent the wilderness preparing for His death and Resurrection

  • 2 Apr – Maundy Thursday – Communion Service – 19.30 pm at South Croydon United Church, Aberdean Road, South Croydon – the last supper where Jesus washed the feet of His Disciples and the first act of Holy Communion was carried out.
  • 3 Apr – Good Friday – Morning Service – 10.30 am – in the Lounge – Jesus’ crucifixion – leading to Easter Sunday
  • 4 Apr – Easter Saturday
  • 5 Apr – Sunday Morning Worship – 10.30 am – Easter Day Communion Sunday – a celebration of the Resurrection – lead by Revds. Maurice Omorojie and Russell Furley-Smith
